The 2012 Siduri Keefer Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir is one of the most fascinating of our 2012 Pinot Noirs. Making this wine is always somewhat akin to putting together a puzzle as we have 6 disparate sections of the vineyard and produce distinct wines from each, working then to blend them back together. In 2012, the differences between these sections was much more pronounced than ever before, with some sections having normal, lower yields and other sections having much higher yields (more typical of the 2012 vintage) and those sections requiring a significant bleed-off. The difference seemed to stem primarily from cluster weights rather than the number of clusters. We treated each section differently, using whole clusters on some but not on others, adding yeast to the must on some, but not on others, and on and on. Ultimately, we ended up with a blend that includes 5 out of the 6 sections of the Keefer Ranch. The 2012 Siduri Keefer Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir represents one of the most complex Keefer Pinots we have ever produced. The wine certainly shows the rich fruit that Keefer is known for, but that is tempered with a more earthy, mineral character than we usually see in this wine. We believe that this additional complexity will only allow the wine to become more compelling with the passage of time.
THIS KEEFER RANCH VINEYARD PINOT NOIR IS A BLEND OF NINE BARRELS OF THE POMMARD CLONE, FIVE BARRELS OF CLONE 2A, FOUR BARRELS OF CLONE 777, THREE BARRELS OF CLONE 115, AND ONE BARREL OF CLONE 114.

The 2012 vintage is already being proclaimed as “stunning, perhaps the best yet” by Jim Laube of Wine Spectator. It was a moderately warm vintage, without excessive heat spikes, which allowed us to harvest when the fruit was ideally ripe. Yields were large in Sonoma County and so we did bleed off some of the juice to concentrate the wine. The 2012 vintage is a rare combination of quality and quantity.
