Description

The wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, a combination of Francois Freres and Ermitage barrels, about 42% new oak. Only 7 barrels of this special vintage were produced. It was fined with organic egg whites and bottled in August 2017. This is our 29th consecutive bottling of this special wine from the X Block. Talking for the first time to the Miller family (Bien Nacido owners) about Syrah at their vineyard, the concern was that they were in a too cool of a site to ripen the grapes every year... but we have ripened these grapes every year since the first vintage of 1987.
The latest we picked was in 1999, on November 16th, and the earliest we’ve picked was this one, the 2015! The balance and intensity of this fine vintage will easily reward 15-20 years of bottle age.
2015 was a warmer than normal vintage, with a smaller than normal crop. We harvested these grapes on September 3rd, about 6 weeks earlier than normal, at 24.2° brix, 3.37 pH and 7.4 acidity. Once again, great balance from a cool climate site, in spite of the warmer vintage! We had a fair amount of shatter in 2015, so I used a little less whole clusters, 30% that was all foot stomped. The grapes were fermented in a small open top tank with manual punch downs twice a day.

All wines have been carefully stored in a temperature control cellar at 55*.

Please understand that during the summer months, the shipping insurance does not cover heat damage incurred during shipping.  We only ship on a Monday and Tuesday to limit the length of time that the wine is on the truck.
