    Description

The wines of Viña Cobos are the result of a shared dream inspired by the passion of an American winemaker and two partners from a wine-producing culture deeply rooted in European traditions. Their founding aspiration: to produce a malbec of power and elegance unequalled anywhere in the world. The inaugural 1999 vintage of Cobos Malbec received the highest score upon release for any Argentine wine. Since then, Paul and partners have grown their family of wines, which continue to receive even greater accolades. Cobos, Bramare and Felino offer three tiers of exceptional chardonnay, merlot, malbec and cabernet sauvignon sourced from Marchiori Vineyard and other select properties within Mendoza.
Depth and complexity are the hallmarks of this blend of malbec and cabernet sauvignon, created in honor of Don Nico Marchiori, patriarch of Marchiori Vineyad. Formerly known as Corte uNico, the wine now bears Don NIco's middle name: Volturno, and it will continue to be produced only in exceptional vintages..
Spring arrived in Mendoza with snow still in the vineyards and was followed by frost and winds, leading to a difficult fruit set. Summer started warmer than average with wind and very dry conditions prevailing. From late February onwards, slightly cooler days and sunny skies yielded perfect ripening conditions. A record one-day rainstorm on March 19 could have been disastrous were it not for the drying winds that followed immediately. The 2010 growing season was characterized by the excellent phenolic ripeness attained at lower Brix levels.
Upper strata of grey and white clay layered with sandy loam gives way to substrata of gravel and stone. Soils are low in organic material, alluvial, and very well drained. Site Northeast sun exposure; semi-desert climate at the foot of the Andes Mountains (3,264 feet) Growing Season The mild, dry winter was followed by a temperate spring, with a notable late frost in November limiting yields and causing mild to severe damage in large areas. It was a warm and dry summer in Perdriel and March and April were very dry with great thermal amplitude, setting ideal ripening conditions.
The complex, sophisticated Volturno shows dark garnet tones with hints of purple in the glass. The nose is deep, with ripe fruit and dusty cocoa powder as it opens. Upon first impression in mouth, the wine is massive, broad-shouldered and weighty, loaded with blackberry, dark chocolate, maduro tobacco, pain grillé, cinnamon and rose petals. The sweet tannins and the spice and floral notes mingle beautifully in the long, balanced finish.
