Relive the days of the Red Baron at 60 feet!
Did you know?
The
Sopwith Triplane
- despite having a single Vickers machine gun for armament - was clearly superior to the more heavily armed German
Albatros D.III
fighters it opposed when it arrived on the Western Front in February of 1917.
The Germans were so impressed they sought to duplicate the performance; more than 30 triplane prototypes were created in Germany and Austria. Dutch designer
Anthony Fokker
studied a downed
Sopwith Tripe,
and the first of his triplanes arrived at the front for evaluation in August of 1917. By the spring of 1918, they were in widespread service.
And that’s how the
Fokker Dr.I Triplane
came to be.
